A network of linked blogs, the History of Rags project explores the perhaps not altogether fanciful notion of dematerialized sculpture. Fusing text, found images, and a mix of altered and unaltered photographic documentation of physically constructed forms, the project aims to present a kind of web-based installation wherein traditional modes of categorical propriety are addressed, reworked, and occasionally undermined. The end result is an interconnected series of metanarrative visual structures that address and play upon shifting contemporary understandings of phenomenology, objectivity, cognition and space.
The idea behind this group show was to showcase contemporary work dealing with themes of transformation, alterity, metamorphosis and flux. The exhibition featured drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and sound and video works by nine artists from California and New York.
